The ICONs are designed not to have protective covers or blackout covers.
There are a couple of reasons why we DON’T use protective covers.
1. They’re utterly useless, in fact, worse than useless.
Did you know, lens covers come from the theorem from the old halogen driving lights days, yes, some 20 years ago!
Originally, covers were designed from a cheap acrylic material which offers no UV protection, no scratch resistance and was brittle. Their main role was protecting glass lenses found in halogen driving lights.
You may ask, why were they using glass and not a PC lens? The intense and inconsistent heat that the halogen bulb made often cracked or distorted PC lens, rendering them useless.
2. PC cover ruin light transmission.
A loss occurs the moment material is placed in front of a light source. This means that you will lose light output from your LED driving lights with PC covers, no matter how refined the material is. The Teralume ICON’s are fitted with material which has incredibly high light transmission qualities, only 4% less than glass!
The other unspoken quality of the PC lens is the strength, our lenses are ridiculously strong. You can expect over 200 times the strength of glass, and it won't ever shatter either! Most LED Driving Lights comes with a PC lens; however, most are made from an extremely poor acrylic material which results in a monumental loss light transmission and often irreversibly discolours in the sun and becomes brittle.
We are so confident in the lens material we use; we have literally chosen not to design a lens cover to integrate into the ICON.
